Five New Zealand airmen from No. 256 Squadron, outside a public bar in Colerne village, England. Handwritten on the reverse "The original caption for this photograph, written by Sgt. LJ Ellmers, reads as follows: "5 New Zealanders of Squadron 256. Left to right. Noel Clifford from Wellington, self, P/O McKinnon - No. 6 course, Reg Robinson from Christchurch and Bill Fremlin, March 1941. We were off to town and the chap who owned the pub had a taxi which we often hired." None of these 5 New Zealanders survived the war, 4 of them being killed within 6 months of this photograph being taken, the 5th being killed before the end of the following year: [NZ]402166 Sergeant (Air Gunner) N.A.J. Clifford and [NZ]40760 Sgt (Pilot) L.J. Ellmers were both killed in a mid-air collision over Blackpool on 27.8.41. [NZ]40772 Pilot Officer (later Flight Lieutenant) (Pilot) A.C. McKinnon was killed on 6.12.42 whilst serving with 488 Sqn. [NZ]402116 Sgt (Air Gunner) R.L. Robinson was killed on 16.4.41 in an air raid whilst on 7 days leave in London. [NZ]402108 Sgt (Air Gunner) E.R. Fremlin was killed in a night flying accident at nether Kellet, near Carnforth, Lancashire, on 15.5.41. The photograph was taken whilst 256 Sqn were based at R.A.F. Colerne, Wiltshire. The public house, 'The Six Bells' still exists in Colerne village High Street, the exterior of the pub having changed little since 1941, although the landlord, Leonard Kelly is long gone. But it still serves 'Ushers Ale'. "
