"Sgt Pilot Newman. Wellington. NZ. Went up in his Brewster Buffalo to engage [a] formation of Jap bombers. Before he reached his objective 15 Jap Nay 'O' fighter planes came out of the blue and surrounded him finally shooting him down. Great daring was shown by this brave young pilot. Much could be written of his last battle."
